Sources of Information of Modern Indian History :
Books, newspapers & magazines :
- Printing press which invented in Germany in 15th century ЁЯСЙ common use in India in 18th century
- Resulted in mass printing of books, newspapers, magazines and pamphlets which are important sources of information for historians today
- Books were printed in English & various regional languages
- Many biographies of great people were written
- Max Muller wrote about the Vedas and Indian philosophy, though he had never been to India
Government documents :
- British officials were particular about keeping records
- Include official British documents, official letters and correspondence, survey maps, district gazettes and census records
- They preserved in Nation Archives of India & National Museum, New Delhi
- Government museum in Chennai, Mumbai & Kolkata also possess original documents like letters by Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru
India in the Modern World :
- After Aurangzeb's death in 1707, Mughal empire went down
- Powerful new kingdoms by Marathas & Sikhs
- Rulers of Hyderabad, Awadh, Carnatic & Bengal ruled independently
- Merchants from Europe began shop trading bases along India's coast
- Europeans took advantage of rivalries among the Indian rulers & made their own bases stronger
- They also fought among themselves for control over hugely profitable trade with India
- Soon British became main power in India and ruled for 2000 years
Historical Buildings :
1) Gateway of India - built to commemorate the visit to king George V. and queen Marry to Mumbai in 1911
2) Victoria Memorial ( Kolkata ) - white marble building in memory of queen Victoria who died in 1901
